This is one of our local standbys. There’s nothing too fancy here, but when you’re looking for a reliably enjoyable meal in a bright and airy space then this is a solid choice. Wildwood is a chain of restaurants, and they do their best to fit in with the local surroundings and, where possible, to restore the features of older buildings.
The staff at our local branch are lovely, always welcoming and on hand without hovering. On this occasion, as we often do, we started with marinated olives and rosemary and garlic bread. Yum! This is simple and lovely to pick at whilst we catch up on the day’s happenings. One of the things that really annoys me is when restaurants are so keen to maximise their revenue that they squeeze in as many tables as possible, resulting in an uncomfortably overcrowded space where it can be difficult to hold a private conversation. Luckily Wildwood are wise to this and allow their diners the space to breathe.
Mains were moules marinieres for me and peri-peri marinated chicken for him. It really shouldn’t need to be said, but a quick tip to any restaurant serving mussels – please don’t include broken shells. It looks as if you’ve tried to force the little creatures to open up, and we all know the nasty effects of eating mussels that aren’t ready to yield their bounty. Luckily it was the appearance alone that was affected, and I thoroughly enjoyed my plateful.
We shared a chocolate honeycomb fudge cake for dessert. I’m not sure what happened to the honeycomb in this, but as a chocolate fudge cake it was very tasty.
