Dinner, London

The German Gymnasium, King’s Cross

Our second foray into the treasure trove of delectable bargains that is the annual Evening Standard/D&D Offer was much more satisfying than our city excursion.  This time we picked The German Gymnasium, and just squeaked in before the offer ended. This is a very popular choice, and next year we’ll certainly be booking earlier!

London’s vibrant King’s Cross

Originally hosting the first purpose-built gym in England, this Grade II-listed building sits in the heart of London’s vibrant King’s Cross. German Gymnasium serves ‘Mittel-European’ (their words) inspired dishes. It was a complete treat, from the spectacular building itself to the warmth of the staff, and not least the completely delectable food.

For starters we had kohlrabi and salmon tartare, and then we both plumped (an apt word) for grilled Nürnberger sausages with sauerkraut, potato puree and crisp onions. We also started fantasising about booking a mini break to Germany. Dessert was apple strudel with vanilla sauce for the home cooked puddings addict, and crunchy peanut butter ice cream for me.

We will be back, perhaps for brunch in the Grand Cafe.
