This is a local treasure, and as it’s under a five minute walk from the tube station (Buckhurst Hill is on the east side of the Central line) it’s easily accessible, sitting right on the London/Essex border. Living nearby, we love Buckhurst Hill for it’s quiet village-like atmosphere. The Queen’s Rooms is a cafe by day and transforms into a small, but perfectly formed, restaurant at night. In it’s seventh year, this is quirky and relaxing place to while away an evening whether or not it’s a special occasion.
Friday Night Dinner
We don’t need much of an excuse to call any occasion ‘special’ and so we headed out for a Friday night dinner. The first thing you notice at The Queen’s Rooms is the lovely welcome, we were treated like old friends and seated in one of the single row of tables for two that line the wall opposite the kitchen – the main room is a very long and thin, and that gives it a more intimate feel.
The menu here is unusual in that it lets the meat be the star of the show, relying on the excellent Josper Grill. If you’re a fan of a perfectly cooked steak, this is the place for you. We shared a starter of chorizo, broad beans, peas and peppers – with a little crusty bread to mop up the tasty juices, this was just perfect and left plenty of room for the main event.
A. selected the sirloin steak with an authentic Brazilian chimichurri sauce. Now I’m not a huge fan of steak, so I went for the Gourmet Burger and it was one of the best I’ve tasted. Juicy, well balanced with relish and pickles and served with deliciously crisp and fluffy chips. We washed it down with a bottle of Montepulciano Borgata, the perfect accompaniment.
Did we have room for dessert? Well not really, but we stretched to sharing the Queen’s Trifle and were glad we did, although we could have rolled down the hill on the way home.
We loved it here and will happily return many more times, and try the daytime cafe too as the menu is completely different. For our Friday night dinner the bill was under £65, including wine, which we thought was excellent value.
